Masaala festivity is unique cultural festival in Kembata Tembaro zone people. Mesaala is a bright season that people of the area consider that they got bright season- dark/gloomy season has passed. Mesaala is a season of cooperation, memorization and helping families and relatives. Persons who live at different corners of the country and some abroad return to their homes and get together with their families. Mesaala is a season of peace treaty, negotiation among individuals and the community members come together to resolve the conflict. Any issue is resolved before the feast of Masaala. The celebration of Mesaala is taken as the first day or day of the New Year, the society says, 'Happy new year in the Mesaala rather than in first day of the month Meskerem. If one wants to know the age of someone, asks, 'How many Mesaala have passed after you were born?' rather than 'How old are you? Generally Masaala is received as a beloved guest and sent accompanied by blessings. The bird called Enare foretells the coming of the season of Mesaala approaches and children, they hear the voice of her, tell this to the family. Masaala is a very special holiday celebrated meaningfully and magnificently through active participation of all members of the family in the community. Celebration of Masaala includes burning of bonfire or mariisho/giirqasaancho in Kembata language before eve of Masaala and eve of Masaala itself. This differs from place to place in the zone. Bonfire culturally shows the bright season and the New Year's vision, plan and success. Cultural foods like atakaana, muchcho, special kocho kita, sulso, choparo, and other foods are prepared and served in the season of Masaala. Atakaana is the most favorable food and takes place one day before the day of Masaala. It is made from kocho and different condiments apart from butter and milk. Other cultural foods and drinks are prepared for the celebration of Masaala festivity. The Masaala festival preparation starts from the celebration day of Masaala itself during the year round by traditional saving methods for instance, equb in slaughter house up to the day of the festival celebration to the next year's festival. Each family member has duties as stated above. Women start saving butter and prepare special kocho starting from seven or more months before the season. People begin to keep the grass for domestic animals. This is started especially after celebration of Easter. During Masaala not only humans but also domestic animals like cows, sheep, goats etc. celebrate the festivity by feeding by prepared grass or special grass. The grass protected for this purpose locally is known as kalo. Source:- Visit wonderful Tourist Attraction of kembata... "Tourist Guide Book"
